Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has witnessed a leadership transition as Professor Mahmood Yakubu handed over to May Agbamuche, who now serves as Acting National Chairman.

The handover took place on Tuesday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners and senior officials.

Yakubu, who has been at the helm since November 2015, commended Agbamuche’s experience and urged staff to give her full support until a substantive chairman is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner, is now tasked with steering INEC’s ongoing electoral and administrative operations to ensure stability and continuity.

The transition has sparked wide conversations across social media, with Nigerians sharing mixed reactions to the change at the nation’s top electoral office.
