Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, joins Chelsea after six seasons at Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers.
Martinez expressed his excitement at joining the London club, saying the move was an easy decision for both him and his family.
He also said he was determined to help Chelsea win more trophies, highlighting his competitive mentality and desire to succeed at the club.
Martinez began his professional career at Argentine side Independiente before joining Arsenal in August 2010 at the age of 17. Following several loan spells, he became Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season and helped the club win the FA Cup.
He moved to Aston Villa in September 2020 and made 256 appearances for the club over six seasons, helping Villa win the UEFA Europa League in May.
At international level, Martinez made his Argentina debut in June 2021 and has earned 67 caps. He was part of the squads that won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
His performances have also seen him win the Yashin Trophy at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies, recognising him as one of the world’s leading goalkeepers.
Martinez said he plans to bring his trademark passion, intensity and commitment to Stamford Bridge, promising to give his best in every match and training session as he begins his Chelsea career.
