President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as the Governor of Rivers State, but on the condition that he will not seek a second term in 2027.
According to TheCable, this agreement was reached during a private meeting in Abuja on Thursday, June 26, involving President Tinubu, Governor Fubara, his predecessor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and members of the suspended Rivers State House of Assembly.
Presidency sources say the arrangement is part of a broader plan to restore political stability in Rivers following months of intense crisis between Fubara and Wike. Under the deal, Fubara will complete his current tenure but must forgo any ambition for reelection.
Another major term of the truce reportedly allows Wike to nominate all 23 local government chairpersons in the state—thereby securing his hold on grassroots politics and effectively regaining control of Rivers’ political structure.
Additionally, Governor Fubara is said to have agreed to pay all outstanding benefits and entitlements owed to the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers who were suspended after defecting to the APC. In return, the lawmakers will drop all plans to impeach him.
The agreement also acknowledges the ongoing debate over the lawmakers’ legitimacy, as their defection had triggered a legal and constitutional controversy over whether they forfeited their seats.
A source familiar with the negotiations described the compromise as one that comes “at a steep cost” to Fubara.
“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no local government control, and peace will return,” the source revealed.
Another insider added,
“The president made it clear that Rivers cannot afford a prolonged crisis. The deal is about restoring calm, but it comes at a steep cost for Fubara. Wike is the real winner here.”
This development marks a significant turning point in the Rivers political saga and highlights President Tinubu’s role as a stabilizing force—albeit one requiring heavy political sacrifices.
