Former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political terrain ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amaechi made the announcement on Thursday, July 3, during the public unveiling of the interim leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition in Abuja. The event, which attracted several opposition figures and political observers, signalled the deepening momentum of a planned national coalition seeking to upend the ruling party’s dominance.
According to Amaechi, his resignation from the APC was submitted on Wednesday night, after what he described as long-standing frustration with the party’s direction. He noted, with thinly veiled sarcasm, that despite repeated warnings to the APC not to involve him in its internal meetings, he was surprised the party hadn’t taken disciplinary action earlier.
“They knew I had moved on. I told them to stop inviting me to their meetings, yet no expulsion came. Maybe they were waiting for me to say it out loud — well, here it is,” he said.
Speaking candidly, Amaechi accused the APC-led federal government of attempting to rig the 2027 elections with the active complicity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He warned that electoral manipulation was being orchestrated “in broad daylight,” stating that Nigerians must wake up before the system collapses entirely.
“The country is broken. Completely destroyed,” Amaechi said. “People can’t eat, there’s no money, inflation is suffocating families, and all this government is doing is plotting how to hijack the next election.”
He stressed that his defection to the ADC coalition was not just political, but a moral and national duty to join forces for a realignment that can return governance to the people.
“This isn’t about me. It’s about Nigeria. We need a national movement — not just a political party — to take our country back,” he added.
The announcement comes amid growing calls from civil society, political opposition, and activists for a unified front to challenge the APC in 2027. The ADC coalition, now hosting prominent figures like former Senate President David Mark and former Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi, is positioning itself as the platform for that resistance.
Amaechi’s move has already begun to stir reactions across party lines, with many analysts describing it as one of the most consequential political realignments since 2015.
