    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Rio de Janeiro following Nigeria’s debut as a BRICS partner country at the 2025 BRICS Summit hosted by Brazil. The presidential aircraft took off from Galeão Air Force Base at approximately 1 p.m. Brazilian time. President Tinubu, who attended the summit on the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, addressed world leaders on the opening day of the high-level meeting of heads of state and government of emerging economies. In his remarks, Tinubu called for “a comprehensive reevaluation of global governance structures, financial systems, and healthcare frameworks to ensure fairness, inclusion, and justice for low-income and emerging economies, particularly in Africa.” He advocated for sustainable technology transfer and accessible financing to enable equitable participation of emerging economies in global development initiatives. “We must chart a new path of justice—one that recognises the developmental rights of all and ensures that no region is left behind,” he said. Drawing attention to Africa’s environmental vulnerabilities despite contributing minimally to global emissions, he cited regional efforts such as the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall, while expressing optimism for broader international collaboration at COP30. On Nigeria’s domestic front, Tinubu highlighted reforms targeting renewable energy, climate action, urban resilience, and universal health coverage. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation and called for global engagement on “financial restructuring, debt forgiveness, and inclusive climate action.” Nigeria officially joined BRICS as a partner country in January 2025, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, expanding the group’s influence and reach. President Tinubu’s participation in the 2025 BRICS Summit signifies Nigeria’s evolving role in global economic and diplomatic affairs. It would be recalled that the President departed Nigeria on 28 June for Saint Lucia, where he formalised bilateral relations with both the host country and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
