The Federal Government has officially concluded its case against Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in the high-profile terrorism trial currently underway at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
At Thursday’s hearing, lead prosecuting counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), announced the closure of the prosecution’s case after the fifth and final witness, identified in court proceedings as “EEE” for security reasons, concluded testimony and cross-examination.
Awomolo told the court presided over by Justice James Omotosho that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence, including documented materials and recorded broadcasts, to support the terrorism-related charges brought against the IPOB leader.
“Having called five witnesses and tendered substantial documentary evidence, the prosecution is satisfied it has made its case,” Awomolo stated. “I therefore close the case.”
In swift response, Kanu’s lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), informed the court of the defence team’s intention to file a no-case submission. This legal move suggests that the defence believes the prosecution has not sufficiently proven the allegations to warrant Kanu’s continued trial.
Justice Omotosho took note of the development and is expected to announce a date for hearing the no-case submission in the coming days.
Nnamdi Kanu, who was re-arrested and extradited to Nigeria in 2021, is facing multiple charges, including terrorism, treason, and incitement, over his alleged role in the Biafran separatist movement and his controversial broadcasts.
The trial has drawn significant national and international attention, especially among human rights advocates, the Igbo community, and political analysts closely monitoring its implications for civil liberties and regional agitation in Nigeria.
The court proceedings continue to unfold amid tight security and heightened public interest.
