2024 MTV VMAs: Comedian Craze Clown throws shade at Davido and others after losing award to South African singer Tyla
Popular Nigerian comedian Craze Clown also known as Papa Ade in a recent comment throws shade at Davido and others after losing award to South African artistes Tyla at the 2024 MTV VMAs.
The 2024 MTV Music Video Awards took place on September 11, 2024, where South African singer and songwriter Tyla triumphed over Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr to win the Best Afrobeats Award.
Tyla earned her first nomination at the VMAs and won the Best Afrobeats category with her hit song “Water,” which also secured her a Grammy at the 66th Grammy Awards. She beat out Burna Boy’s “City Boys,” Ayra Starr’s “Last Heartbreak Song,” Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s “Ruin” featuring Pheelz, and Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” for the award.

Receiving her award, Tyla expressed happiness over the impact her song made to the world at large and that was just the beginning. While she gives shoutouts to Nigerian singers like, Tems, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Rema and Lojay, she made it known that she is not an Afrobeats artiste but an Amapiano singer from South Africa.
In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed joy over the global impact of her song, stating that it was just the beginning. She gave shoutouts to Nigerian artists like Tems, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Rema, and Lojay, but clarified that she is not an Afrobeats artist, emphasizing that she is an Amapiano singer from South Africa.

This above statement made by Tyla during her acceptance speech did not sit down well with many Nigerians including famous comedian Craze Clown who took to the comment section of the above video to react.
Craze Clown voiced his strong displeasure at Tyla for stating she is an Amapiano artist, not an Afrobeats artist, after winning the Afrobeats award over Nigerian singers. The comedian also criticized Nigerian artists for abandoning Afrobeats and frequently adopting the Amapiano sound in recent years.
He said; “You give person award for best student in maths subject and the student collect the award come say she no write maths exam say na English subject she write but all of them na subject sha. If we keep DISSECTING AFROBEATS to other sounds, we will lose AFROBEATS and it has started happening.”
