Anambra Govt, Police Arrest Vigilante Operatives Over Misconduct Against NYSC Member
The Anambra State Government has confirmed the arrest of vigilante operatives who assaulted and stripped a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, in Oba, Idemili South LGA.
The incident, which occurred on 23 July 2025, went viral after The Haven 360 Foundation uploaded the video on Facebook.
Special Adviser on Community Security to Governor Charles Soludo, Ken Emeakayi, described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” explaining that the operatives had pursued suspected cultists into the NYSC lodge under Operation Udo Ga-Achi, a joint task force involving the police, army, DSS, NSCDC, and vigilantes.
Emeakayi said: “While they were acting within the law, their conduct in that instance was unacceptable. Immediately the incident happened, we arrested the operatives involved and placed them in detention.”
He confirmed he had met with the corps member and NYSC officials, assuring that disciplinary measures were being taken.
Anambra Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed the arrest, stating that investigation was ongoing but temporarily stalled due to the victim’s unavailability.
Ikenga stressed that “Assault in any form remains a criminal offence under Nigerian law… The Command cautions vigilante groups and other quasi-security outfits against acts of brutality or abuse of authority.”
He assured corps members of police protection and urged them to promptly report any cases of harassment or abuse.
