INEC Chairman Vows to Deliver Free, Fair Elections
The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), has pledged to defend the Constitution and uphold the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system, vowing to deliver free, fair and transparent elections.
Speaking shortly after taking his oath of office at the State House, Abuja, Professor Amupitan affirmed his commitment to protecting the integrity of the nation’s democracy, stressing that the Commission under his leadership will not compromise on electoral standards or legal provisions guiding the process.
“So I will reaffirm what I have just taken, that I’m going to defend the Constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as far as it relates to the electoral system, and like the President said, I was given a clear charge to ensure credible, fair and free election.”

He assured Nigerians that INEC will strengthen its internal systems, improve its processes, and demonstrate unwavering fairness in all future polls.
Professor Amupitan noted, however, that credible elections cannot be achieved by the Commission alone, emphasising the critical role of stakeholders, including political actors, security agencies, civil society, the media, and the electorate.
“No matter how high we set the bar for success, we will still need the cooperation of all stakeholders to achieve it,” he stated, pledging broad consultation and consistent engagement as part of his reform strategy.
Professor Amupitan’s remarks followed President Tinubu’s charge earlier in the day, urging the new INEC Chairman to safeguard electoral integrity, strengthen public confidence in the Commission, and fortify the nation’s democratic institutions.
