Mercy Eke: I regret going to Big Brother Naija
Former Big Brother Naija winner, Mercy Eke, has revealed that despite the fame, financial success and opportunities she gained from the reality television show, she regrets participating in it because of its impact on her personal life, particularly her quest to settle down in marriage.
The reality TV star made the disclosure during an emotional interview with media personality Toke Makinwa, where she spoke candidly about her experiences with love, relationships and the challenges that have accompanied life in the spotlight.
According to Mercy, while the show transformed her career and opened doors to numerous opportunities, it also made finding genuine love and a suitable life partner much more difficult.
Fame changed everything
Reflecting on her life after emerging winner of the reality show, Mercy said she now believes the popularity she attained has complicated her relationships.
She explained that although she has reached a stage in her life where she desires marriage and family, achieving that dream has proved more difficult than she had imagined.
“I regret going to Big Brother even though I love the benefits that come from it,” she said.
She admitted that she often falls deeply in love and has repeatedly approached relationships with sincerity, only to encounter disappointment.
“I said to myself that I want to marry, I want to marry, but it’s not easy,” she added.
Financial imbalance in relationships
Mercy also opened up about the financial dynamics that characterised some of her previous relationships.
According to her, she had dated men who were financially struggling and found herself providing significant financial support in the hope of building lasting relationships.
She disclosed that the situation occurred on more than one occasion, saying she had given money to several former partners because they lacked financial stability.
“I have dated guys that I have given a lot of money to, not one, not two, because they don’t have,” she said.
Although she did not reveal the identities of the individuals involved or the amounts she spent, her comments highlighted what she described as recurring financial imbalance in her relationships.
Desire to settle down
The former reality television star said her greatest desire now is to build a stable home and enjoy a successful marriage.
She acknowledged that while professional achievements and financial success have brought fulfilment in many areas of her life, they have not replaced the emotional satisfaction of finding a compatible life partner.
Her comments resonated with many fans on social media, where discussions quickly emerged about the pressures celebrities often face in maintaining relationships under constant public scrutiny.
Some users sympathised with Mercy, arguing that fame can make it difficult to identify genuine partners, while others stressed the importance of compatibility and shared values over financial status.
Life after Big Brother
Since winning Big Brother Naija, Mercy Eke has built one of the most successful careers among former housemates.
She has secured endorsement deals with major brands, ventured into business and established herself as a prominent entrepreneur, influencer and television personality.
Her success has also seen her become one of the most recognisable faces in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with millions of followers across various social media platforms.
Despite those accomplishments, Mercy’s latest remarks suggest that personal happiness has remained an important priority.
Celebrity relationships under pressure
Mercy’s revelation has once again drawn attention to the challenges many public figures encounter in their personal relationships.
Entertainment analysts note that fame often attracts attention from individuals with varying motives, making it difficult for celebrities to distinguish genuine affection from relationships driven by financial interests or public visibility.
The pressure of maintaining a public image, coupled with constant scrutiny from fans and the media, has also contributed to the breakdown of several high-profile celebrity relationships over the years.
For Mercy, however, the hope of finding lasting love remains alive despite the disappointments she has experienced.
Her candid remarks have sparked widespread conversations online, with many praising her openness about the realities of fame and the emotional struggles that often accompany success.
While she continues to thrive professionally, the former BBNaija champion says her ultimate aspiration is no longer centred on fame or wealth but on finding a life partner and building a happy family.
